President's Message
| |
| | Malcolm E. Beech, Sr |
2007 has been a significant year for CHM growth, maturation and renewed focus. We thank all of our members, donors, supporters, advertisers and grantors for your solid encouragement throughout the year. Most significantly is the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation grant that supported our largest and best attended USCT Symposium to date in Raleigh, continued research on USCT history in North Carolina in conjunction with an expanded NC Civil War Trails program and development of a N.C. social studies curriculum that includes USCT history. The great support of the NC Humanities Council allowed us to offer the USCT Symposium as a free event open to the public. | |
| | We have received national recognition from the Association of African American Museum through selection as a participant in their "Leadership Initiative" museum professionals training program. Also, the National Trust for historic Preservation selected CHM to participate in their "Diversity Scholar" program for training in historic preservation and "green" environmental development.
Overall, 2007 has been a very good year with our widest outreach efforts with our 37th USCT re-enactors living history presentations in Rocky Mount, Tarboro, Plymouth, New Bern, Wilmington, Raleigh, Hertford and Kinston. Special thanks goes to the Kinston/Lenoir Tourism Development Authority for a capital improvement grant for exterior building enhancements.
